To start owning your own business, you might want to ask any business owner if there is anything in particular that they learned while starting their business. They may have had there own business plan structure. From there you will want to make the decision on whether this is really for you. Do you have the traits that it takes to be a successful business owner? Do you have perseverance? Are you willing to work hard to get what you want? Jerry Bruckheimer, the great producer of many wonderful movies said once, “the harder you work the luckier you get.”

Management skills are important when you begin a business even if you don’t plan on hiring employees. Most business is about sales and the better you get along with people the more it will be to your advantage. The key to sales is that people will buy from people they like. Take the time to ask questions about your customer’s life and then listen. Far too often it is easy to jump in and step on others’ conversation. If you don’t say another word and just listen to them speak you will be ingratiated in their eyes and you will learn something of value as to how they think and/or operate. Everything in owning your own business is about selling. Selling yourself first. Secondly, selling your business. Finally, selling your product or service.

After you have decided that you are up to the task you will want to follow the next steps.

• Do a feasibility study when you begin a business. Who will be your targeted customer? Who is your competition? How does your competition obtain clients? If your business is about products then ask yourself who your suppliers will be. How will your business be marketed whether it be online, print advertising or direct mail?

• Develop a detailed business plan structure. Write about the description of your company to include objectives, competitors, marketplace, financial data, and how you plan to meet your goals.

• Get your financing in place. Do you have a 401k that can be invested? Are there any friends or family willing to pitch in? Is the equity in your home available to be provided for a loan? Can you qualify for a SBA loan? There are many ways to finance your business. If you plan on financing your business have a detailed business plan to show your lender.

• Decide on the business plan structure of your company. Will you be a sole proprietor in owning your own business or will you have a partnership. Partnerships are not advised unless you absolutely must to share the expenses. Incorporating is a wise thing to do because then your house and other personal holdings will be protected against law suits. Setting up an LLC is most advised.

• Come up with a name to begin a business that stands out and is memorable. Choose a name that closely matches your service or product. The earlier in the alphabet the better. This will guarantee premium placement in most directories.

• Establish whether there are special permits or licenses in your county. In most cases you will only need a fictitious name or a DBA (Doing Business As) in owning your own business.

• Bring together your marketing materials. Build a website (if necessary), and have business cards and a letter head created. You can hire a graphic designer for your cards and letterhead at a nominal price. A designer will basically come up with your logo during the creation of your hard paper products. Create a press kit with an introduction, biography, press releases, and articles. Some businesses need a brochure.

• Setup a bank account to include checking. Take your business documents to show your banker that you are established legally.

• Contact your potential suppliers to create a relationship. Owning your own business is a partnership in may ways.

• Choose whether your business will be based in an office complex or from home.

Owning your own business is quite rewarding. Begin a business with our listed business plan structure and you will have an advantage that most folks will not.
